HR Guidance for Supervisors and Staff

We greatly appreciate the ongoing hard work and dedication of both our faculty and staff to support our students during the most recent events. It is through your work everyday that we support our student’s health, safety and education needs.

In light of events on campus, I have received questions about how staff and supervisors should handle requests regarding accommodations for staff who are concerned about their safety on campus.

After talking with their managers or unit leadership, staff who have questions or concerns related to attendance and staff safety should contact the HR Shared Services Center at 315.443.4042 or hrservice@syr.edu.

We recognize the impact these events can have on our faculty and staff, particularly those from underrepresented communities. There are many resources available to support campus community members, including:

  • For faculty and staff, assistance is available through Carebridge, the University’s Faculty and Staff Assistance Program. Trained clinicians are available by phone 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and can be reached at 800.437.0911.
  • For additional support and services, the campus community may contact Hendricks Chapel at 315.443.2901.

Thank you again.

Preparing for Winter Weather: What to Know

As Central New York begins to see the first signs of winter, with cooler temperatures and fluttering snow, it is important for members of the campus community to be aware of how decisions are made and communicated in the instance of a change in the University’s operating status due to inclement weather.

The University is actively monitoring the snow forecast for the next 24 hours and does not anticipate any change in schedules.

Though the University will, in general, remain open for business despite adverse weather conditions, the safety and well-being of campus community members is always a priority when determining the institution’s operating status.

The University works with an independent weather service, Precision Weather Service, to help inform decisions about weather delays, closings or work-schedule changes. Input is also provided by the divisions of Campus Safety and Emergency Services and Campus Facilities, Administration and Services.

In the event of extreme weather and if a change in the University’s operating status becomes necessary, it will be announced via the University’s emergency broadcast notification system and will carry the notice SU WEATHER ALERT. Please be sure your Orange Alert settings are always up to date in MySlice.

SU WEATHER ALERT information will be announced via the following communications methods:

Only Syracuse University’s internal communications and media relations teams are authorized to transmit to the news media and the campus community announcements about closings, work-schedule changes or class-start delays.

Although Syracuse University rarely closes for inclement weather, campus community members should be aware and take precautions when severe weather is in the area. If employees encounter weather conditions that could affect their safety when traveling to/from the University, they should use their judgment as it relates to their travel. Faculty and staff concerned about their safety should contact their department chair or supervisor, respectively.

For information on winter weather preparedness, visit the Department of Public Safety website.

Thank You for Boosting the ’Cuse!

The Syracuse University community came together to make Boost the ’Cuse: 44 hours for Syracuse University an outstanding success.

The preliminary #BoostCuse results are in: during 44 legendary hours, 6,210 generous donors gave $2,571,362 to the part of Syracuse University that meant the most to them. Those numbers are rising, as the Boost the ’Cuse team counts additional gifts that were made offline.

Current students and young alumni dominated the graduation year leaderboard. Donors from the classes of 2020, 2023, 2022, 2014 and 2018 held the top five spots for most gifts made. Gifts came from students, alumni, parents, faculty/staff and many others.

“It’s an amazing feeling to know that someone who you’ve never met makes a gift to help enrich the lives of current students,” says Assata Cradle-Morgan ’20, a dual food studies and policy studies major. “It’s heartwarming when someone I don’t know gives back to enable myself and future Syracuse University students to have the chance to further our educations and further our futures.”

The #BoostCuse clock started at 4 a.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 5, with a goal of inspiring 5,000 donors to support Syracuse University before 11:59 p.m. on Nov. 6.  The goal was achieved, then surpassed, with a 23 percent increase in donors over last year and participation from all 50 states and 25 different countries.

Alumni, students, faculty, staff, parents, friends and loyal Syracuse fans gave to support their Orange passions. Gifts were designated for everything from scholarships to school and college dean’s funds to units like the Office of Multicultural Advancement, Syracuse University Libraries and Syracuse Athletics. Whether $1 or $10,000, every gift mattered.

A scholarship from the Syracuse University Alumni Club of Los Angeles helped Andrew Regalado ’20 before he even set foot on campus, and a scholarship from the Washington, D.C., Alumni Club provided Regalado financial assistance during his first summer internship in D.C.

“I truly wouldn’t be here at Syracuse University without the generosity of those who give. It’s those benefits and those kind gifts from alumni I’ve never met that have impacted me the most. I’m very thankful to all who gave,” says Regalado, a dual political science and policy studies major and current president of the Forever Orange Student Alumni Council.

On campus, a number of fun activities—a rock climbing competition, a timed Mario Kart video game event and a search for stuffed Ottos—engaged students during the 44 hours. More than 100 basketball fans attended a Boost the ’Cuse tailgate prior to the men’s game against the University of Virginia. And across the country, alumni clubs hosted gatherings to watch the game and celebrate alumni philanthropy.

Final #BoostCuse results and additional details will be shared next week. In the meantime, watch the “Thank You” video and check out the Boost the ’Cuse leaderboards.

FY19 Largest Single Fundraising Year in Syracuse University History

One year after announcing—and then exceeding—its ambitious 2018 fundraising goal, Syracuse University has broken another fundraising record. In fiscal year 2019, gifts, pledges and gifts-in-kind from individuals, foundations and organizations totaled $163,431,283—the highest one-year fundraising total in the University’s history. The total is 8.9 percent greater than the $150,087,407 raised in FY 2018.

“Syracuse University’s momentum is undeniable,” says Chancellor Kent Syverud. “The Orange spirit fueling the generosity of our donors is testament to their enthusiasm and support for our future and the futures of generations of students who will contribute in meaningful ways to improve our world. The vision for Syracuse University, in which our students have a truly distinctive experience that prepares them for long-lasting success, is clearly inspirational. We are grateful for the growing support, year after year, from all corners of the country and the world.”

With the Invest Syracuse campaign still underway and the start of events marking the sesquicentennial celebration, Syracuse University is attracting an increasingly broad and diverse set of donors. Nearly 61,000 donors made gifts of support for the vision of Syracuse University. That’s a 16 percent increase in the number of donors from the year before.

More than half the total raised over the last year came from alumni.

“They are telling us that they are grateful for their own Orange experiences and want to make a difference in the lives of students today and tomorrow,” says Matt Ter Molen, senior vice president and chief advancement officer. “Through their generosity, they are opening doors of opportunity for those coming behind them. In fact, this past year, more than $29 million was raised as part of the Invest Syracuse campaign to provide scholarships to deserving students.”

Invest Syracuse originally sought to raise $40 million in scholarship support. The University well exceeded that goal—raising $54 million with no signs of slowing down.

Ter Molen notes that there was an increase in all kinds of gifts, large and small, which contributed to the record total. There was a 50 percent increase in gifts over $500,000 and a 3.5 percent increase in gifts totaling more than $1 million. Finally, nearly 5,000 alumni, parents, students, faculty, staff and friends participated in the 2018 Boost the ’Cuse initiative, a one-day fundraising event. Collectively, donors contributed $1.76 million to the University as part of Boost the ’Cuse ranging in gifts from $5 to $100,000. This year’s Boost the ’Cuse will commence on Tuesday, Nov. 5, at 4 a.m. and run for an unprecedented 44 consecutive hours. To participate, visit boostcuse.syr.edu.

Momentum continues to build as Syracuse University prepares to launch its largest fundraising campaign in its 150 years. Though details are still being finalized, the Orange community is encouraged to stay tuned for a historic announcement, coming in early November. In the meantime, it’s never too early to give. No gift is too small, and every gift makes an impact. To make an immediate impact, give today by visiting giving.syr.edu or by contacting the Office of Development at 315.443.1848.

There are numerous other ways to engage with the University, including volunteer opportunities, connecting current students to internship opportunities and attending an alumni event.
