Syracuse University provides benefits-eligible employees with foundational life insurance and disability coverage, plus options to build on that protection for yourself and the people who depend on you.
Life and disability insurance are critical components of your financial planning. Review this information to understand the protections available through your benefit program.
Life Insurance
The University provides a base level of life insurance and Accidental Death & Dismemberment (AD&D) insurance at no cost to you. You can also purchase supplemental coverage for yourself and your dependents at favorable group rates.
A few things worth knowing about supplemental coverage:
- Premiums (except for supplemental AD&D) are deducted on an after-tax basis, which means any benefits your family receives are generally non-taxable
- Enrolling in supplemental life insurance includes access to free will preparation services — a valuable added benefit that’s easy to overlook
- Enrolling in supplemental AD&D coverage includes travel assistance services
If you’re electing supplemental coverage outside of your initial enrollment window, you may need to complete a Statement of Health form for approval.
Disability Benefits
If an illness or injury ever keeps you from working, your income shouldn’t have to stop too. The University provides disability and salary continuation benefits to protect benefits-eligible employees. You can also choose to supplement that protection with a voluntary Long Term Disability (LTD) plan.
If you’re electing supplemental coverage outside of your initial enrollment window, you may need to complete a Medical History Statement [PDF] for approval.
